Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen – An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!

The previous darkness element, darkness, was also a relatively quiet element, and I felt that this made the solar system a little sparse. And then there’s corruption, a new Darkness element that has just been announced and teased a little, and I’m really excited for it. I’m also a bit jealous, because I was hoping that they’d give me the chance to work on it.

After the introduction of the new Darkness element for D&D Next this month, I had a feeling that I’d get to write about it. So, here goes! Corruption is a new direction for darkness magic, and the official description says: “Corruption is the corrupting of good energies into forces of evil. This energy can be used to boost skills, craft magic items, and much more! Corruption can be harnessed to create a class that specializes in the corrupting of skills, crafting magic items, and more.”

Corruption is a new Darkness element in the upcoming upcoming game The Witch Queen. It was meant to be introduced as a way to give the new game a unique and fun feel. At the very least, it’s a cool new mechanic that lets you play with the game’s rules. The fact that it’s in the game gives me the idea that it will probably also be in other games. What about its use and what about its abilities? How do you use it? Is it a spell or a character skill? Should it be removed when a character levels up? Is it good or bad? What’s it good for, and what’s it bad for? How exactly will Corruption affect the game?

Witch Queen Darkness Subclass Concepts – Corruption

With the Witch Queen’s revelation coming up on August 24th, I’ve been thinking a lot about what the next Darkness element and subclasses might be about. Because of a Twitch interview with Luke Smith in November, we know there will be more Darkness subtypes in the future. I’ve written a separate text version of my views on corruption and what future corruption subclasses may look like, as well as a video version.

All of the artwork was done by the incredibly brilliant Painthisice, for the more aesthetically minded!

Why Is Corruption Coming After Destiny 2?

In Beyond Light, the player was granted the power of Stasis to beat the Fallen Empire massing on Europa at their own game. I believe that in the Witch Queen, the player will be granted the power of Corruption, the source of the Hive’s magic, in order to beat back Savathun’s brood by using their Darkness powers against them. I find this especially likely since the Darkness has branded Savathun as a heretic and marked her for death for interfering with our communications with the Pyramids in Season of Arrivals.

Consider the gameplay synergy between Thorn and the exotic gauntlets Necrotic Grip, a phenomena never seen before in Destiny — it almost seems like an early beta test for what Corruption as a fully-fledged Darkness aspect might be. When you fall victim to Necrotic Grip within the Crucible, the game even claims that you “died to Corruption.”

Finally, when looking at the components in the game today, there is significant indication that Corruption will be the next Darkness element. Solar and Stasis both manipulate systems thermodynamically, with Solar raising entropy and Stasis reducing entropy. Arc is set to be the “dark mirror” of Corruption, because Arc is about firing electrons at our enemies via an electrical arc, whereas Corruption is about forcing matter to undergo radioactive decay and release energy in the form of positrons, which can then be harvested by an outside party like the Hive or Dark Guardians.

A Narrative and Lore-Based Explanation of Corruption

On a narrative/lore level, I believe that there is a strong basis for Corruption as a Darkness element in the Destiny universe, with it acting as a “dark mirror” to the Light-based Arc element. We need to talk briefly about what Arc actually is for Corruption to make sense. Essentially, Arc energy excites electrons so much that it exceeds the binding energy of an atom, which causes said atom to become ionized. This is the basis for electricity and is also the process that Miller%E2%80%93Urey experiment - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!binds molecules together and leads to the creation of complex matter like cells and DNA. In-game, we take this to the extreme, super-charging ourselves with Arc energy and then channeling that chaos at our enemies through an electrical arc.

Corruption, on the other hand, is a force of Darkness that has the power to deconstruct the bonds of matter and tend towards simplicity, rather than complexity, the way of the Sword Logic. This premise is based on an AMAZING theory developed by LettuceDifferent5104 - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!u/LettuceDifferent5104, which I’ll basically be paraphrasing in this post. In nature, we can observe the deconstruction of the bonds of matter as a form of nuclear transmutation that occurs from Radioactive decay - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!radioactive decay, in which an electrically neutral atom will transmute into a “simpler” element of a lower atomic number, causing the atom to release energy in the form of a positron and a neutrino. Corruption is likely to be the force behind the Hive’s magic, which can be boiled down to the Hive stripping living beings of their Light by forcing them to undergo radioactive decay through paracasual means. This extracted energy manifests itself as 603040 865612de633ac3e8a3c8c793f6fd0122 - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts! Hive Soulfire, which is used to feed their worms, power their weaponry, and fuel their own growth.

The most bizarre part is that there’s a smoking gun that backs up this whole theory of Corruption and the Hive’s power. carbon - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!

The primary component of all known life on Earth is Carbon. In humans, almost 99% of the Carbon in our bodies is composed of the stable isotope Carbon-12. Want to know what happens when you force Carbon-12 to undergo radioactive decay? The Carbon transmutes into an unstable isotope called Boron-12. If the decay energy released is high enough during this process, it will cause an exothermic reaction of the Boron molecules. And what does Boron look like when it burns? Green. greenfire - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts! Fire.

Corrode, Decay, and Transmute are some of Corruption’s in-game elemental effects.

I think that, in the future, Bungie will use a “trio” of distinct effects for each game aspect, similar to how they did in the past. Gqya24K - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!

Stasis is based on the Slow, Freeze, and Shatter paradigm. Corrode, Decay, and Transmute, I believe, would make up this “elemental trinity” for Corruption.

Corrode

Corrode would be a stacking debuff, akin to Stasis Slow’s stacking mechanism. When a target has accumulated 100 stacks of Corrode, they will start to decay. Corrode-affected PvE fighters’ health would begin to deplete, and all surrounding combatants’ health would deplete as well. To keep things balanced within the Crucible, Corrode-affected players’ grenade, melee, and class ability energy would begin to drain, and all surrounding players’ ability energy would begin to drain as well. Corrode would have a default duration of 3 seconds, comparable to Stasis Slow’s basic duration.

Galvanic Corrosion, an electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes when it comes into electrical contact with another in the presence of an electrolyte, was the idea for Corrode. In essence, a target corroding in-game is losing their Light to Corrupting Darkness, a process that cascades when the affected player starts to remove the Light of any other creatures unfortunate enough to be in their vicinity.

67uJLBR - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!Decay

Decay is a debuff that causes a victim to take significant amounts of damage over time while the debuff is active. When a Decaying victim is destroyed, a Soulfire Remnant is left behind, which you and your friends may pick up. The Decay debuff would be applied for 2 seconds to players and 5 seconds to PvE fighters.

In many respects, the Decay debuff would be a supercharged subclass version of the current game’s Thorn’s Mark of the Devourer and Soul Remnant features. Decay is essentially Corrode’s “ultimate form,” and a Decaying victim is one who has been fully corrupted by the Darkness, to the point where they are “leaking” huge quantities of their Light, resulting in massive chunks of temporal damage.

Transmute

Picking up a Soulfire Remnant or using certain Corruption abilities directly would cause the Transmute effect to be activated. Transmute differs from Stasis’ last elemental feature in that it is not an AOE effect that causes harm to adjacent targets. With the basic duration set at 3 seconds, triggering the Transmute effect would give a modest quantity of health and offer continuous health restoration while Transmute is active.

Consider this impact as the player “transmuting” enemy targets’ life force, reducing them to simple energy to be devoured, akin to the Hive’s dark alchemic rituals.

When I initially started working on the Tormentor, I looked at the other Hunter Supers that are already available in the game. Tether, Blade Barrage, Silence and Squall, and Celestial Nighthawk Golden Gun are just a few of the “one and done” extraordinary powers available to hunters. Hunters only have Arcstrider and Spectral Blades as “roaming supers” (yes, technically speaking normal Golden Gun is also “roaming” but is not melee-based and gets neither increased speed or damage resistance, making it an anomaly). I believe Hunters need a strong new roaming super ability, a notion that influenced the creation of the Tormentor’s new super ability, Chains of Corruption. This super allows the player to summon a pair of corrosive chains to whip and lash their opponents into submission, as well as execute rapid whip strikes and a powerful spin attack that hits all surrounding enemies with a huge AOE impact. Tormentors would concentrate in corroding their opponents, while Corruption Titans and Corruption Warlocks would specialize in decay and transmutation, respectively.

Corroding Lash is a melee ability.

Tormentors would have a melee ability called Corroding Lash, which allowed them to lash out at their opponents with an overhead chain whip assault that corroded all hit targets. Consider how Trevor Belmont from Castlevania smites his enemies with above strikes with his whip.

DkPKU8s - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!Plague Grenade is the first grenade ability.

The Plague Grenade is the Tormentor’s first grenade choice, which explodes on contact and leaves a cloud of gas that corrodes opponents and decays anyone who remain in the gas cloud for too long. The confusing smoke balls employed by Hive Wizards would be quite similar to this grenade.

Sundering Blast Grenade is the second grenade ability.

The Sundering Blast Grenade, an explosive grenade that causes enemies to deteriorate and suffer damage over time, is the Tormentor’s second grenade choice. This grenade would look a lot like B77zjOt - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!

Incendiary Grenades, but with DOT doing more of the damage instead of the initial explosion.

Transmutation Grenade is the third grenade ability.

The Transmutation Grenade, the Tormentor’s third and final grenade choice, would conjure a transmutation circle upon impact and then transform the life force of all enemies inside the circle’s radius. The purple Hive Runes created by the boss of the Broodhold strike spawn on the floor and rapidly harm anybody who stands in the circle for too long. This grenade would also serve as a trap, not exploding until a target inside the radius of the circle, making it a useful zone control weapon, comparable to the Hive Traps that were widely utilized in the Rise of Iron expansion.

Grappling Chain is the first aspect to consider.

Grappling Chain, an air move that enables the player to push one of their corrosive chains into a surface and drag himself to it, is the first Tormentor Aspect. This would be comparable to the grappling hook in the forthcoming Halo Infinite, but with greater momentum to keep up with Destiny 2’s quicker speed. This ability, like Icarus Dash, would have a short cooldown. This cooldown would be eliminated when the Chains of Corruption super is active, enabling the player to drag himself from surface to surface like a Darkness-infused Spiderman.

qMvmzZd - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!Galvanic Accelerator (Aspect #2)

Galvanic Accelerator is the second Tormentor Aspect, in which destroying a corroding target leads it to release a non-damaging burst of corrosive energy that induces all affected targets to start corroding themselves. This would work similarly to Necrotic Grip, which causes poisoned targets to die by emitting a wave of corrupting energy. This feature would also have a cooldown, since it would be possible to start an endless chain reaction of corroding monsters, which would be a little too powerful for regular gameplay. This cooldown would be eliminated when the Chains of Corruption super is active, providing the super tremendous add-clearing potential by generating continuous blasts of corrosive energy with each kill, similar to the Grappling Chain.

When I was working on the Lancer, I took another look at the other Titans Supers that are currently available. Fists of Havoc, Hammer of Sol, Glacial Quake, and Sentinel Shield are just a few of the Titans’ “roaming supers.” Titans, on the other hand, have just two “one-and-done” super abilities: Thundercrash and Ward of Dawn. Hunters have three (Celestial Nighthawk Golden Gun, Tether, and Silence and Squall) and Warlocks have two ranged “one and done” supers, whereas Titans have none (Nova Bomb and Well of Radiance). The necessity for a ranged one-and-done super inspired the development of the Lancer’s new super ability, Sorrow’s Lance. This super allows the player to conjure a strong lance laced with corruption and hurl it at their opponents, causing a burst of decaying energy to explode and leave a damage-dealing field in its wake.

Decayed Lance is a melee ability.

Lancers would feature a melee ability called Decayed Lance, which would enable them to wind up and hurl a lance at their opponents, causing all affected targets to decay, with precise strikes increasing the lance’s damage. The function of the “wind up” mechanism would be comparable to that of the specificperfumedhuemul - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!

The Weighted Knife of Bottom-Tree Gunslinger has a knife twirl that is done before throwing it, and a precise hit is a one-hit kill in PvP.

Plague, Sundering Blast, and Transmutation are three grenade abilities.

The Corruption grenades would be shared across the three Corruption subclasses, similar to how the Stasis grenades are shared among the Hunter, Titan, and Warlock subclasses.

Lancer’s Charge is the first aspect.

Lancer’s Charge is the first Lancer Aspect, which allows the player to hold down their class ability button to replace their barricade with a surge of corrupting energy, boosting their movement speed and Lift momentum for a short time; additionally, when activating Lancer’s Charge, the player creates a burst around themselves that decays targets. Lancer’s Charge works similarly to the Titan Exotic Gauntlets Icefall Mantle in that it turns you into a speed demon rather than a sluggish moving tank, and it allows Titans to build up momentum with repeated leaps and attacks.

(Note that this will allow you to “D1 Titan Skate,” since D2 macro-skating is WAY quicker and totally broken.)

Aspect #2: The Worm’s Roar

Roar of the Worm is the second Lancer Aspect, which allows the Decayed Lance to cling to surfaces and targets for a brief time before lingering and occasionally firing forth bursts of energy that cause targets to decay. This feature essentially turns the Decayed Lance melee ability into a second grenade, since you’d be able to toss your lance into groups of opponents or at spawn sites for zone control and rapidly cause a large number of enemies to decay.

When I set about designing the Alchemage, I once again took a look at the other Supers that Warlocks have in the game today. Warlocks are pretty balanced when it comes to the “roaming super” vs. “one and done super” debate. Warlocks have a number of roaming supers, such as Nova Warp, Dawnblade, Stormcaller, and Winter’s Wrath. When it comes to “one and done” supers, Warlocks also have plenty of great options, such as Chaos Reach, Nova Bomb, and Well of Radiance. Without a clear need one way or the other, I decided to really lean in to the “mad alchemist” identity for the Corruption Warlock, which fits perfectly with the third and final sub-identity of Corruption: Transmutation. The new super ability for the Alchemage is KYK44aw - Corruption will be the next Darkness element in The Witch Queen - An explanation and prospective subclass concepts!Heart of Soulfire, in which the player enters an alchemic trance to transmute their foes and corrupt their surroundings. With one hand, the player would be able to shoot blasts of soulfire at their foes, and with their other hand, they would be able to position a transmutation circle on a surface and then release to transmute all targets within.

Philosopher’s Grasp is a melee ability.

Alchemists would have a melee ability called Philosopher’s Grasp, which allowed them to charge an alchemic rune and aim at their opponent, then unleash the melee input to harm them and convert their life force. Philosopher’s Grasp’s “aiming mechanism” would work similarly to Salvation’s Grip, but with a restricted range to keep it balanced. Normally, Warlocks may charge up and carry a grenade, such as Handheld Supernova or Chaos Accelerant; now, picture charging up a melee and then releasing it to execute a ranged “life steal” skill, thus transforming Alchemage Warlocks into full-fledged vampires.

Plague, Sundering Blast, and Transmutation are three grenade abilities.

The Corruption grenades would be shared across the three Corruption subclasses, similar to how the Stasis grenades are shared among the Hunter, Titan, and Warlock subclasses.

Alchemic Haste is the first aspect.

Alchemic Haste is the first Alchemage Aspect, in which throwing your rift generates a shockwave that transmutes the life energy of all targets caught in the explosion. Additionally, going through the rift will temporarily improve your and your friends’ movement speed and weapon handling. Alchemic Haste is the Corruption counterpart of the Stasis Aspect “Frostpulse,” however it offers more than just an elemental shockwave while casting your rift. The speed boost provided by passing through an Alchemic Haste Rift would be a fun way to turn the rifts’ typical sluggish, defensive playstyle into an ability that enables you to go on the attack and assist your whole squad rush their opponents with faster mobility and weapon handling.

Aspect #2: Power Rune

The second Alchemage Aspect is Rune of Power, which causes abilities to deal more damage, regenerate quicker, and improve weapon reload speed for a brief period after the transmute effect is triggered. This feature would enable the Alchemage, a master of transmutation and the evil alchemy of Corruption, to get even more advantages beyond the transmute effect’s basic health restoration.

The Three Subclasses Share Corruption Fragments

Finally, I came up with an initial set of eight Corruption Fragments that could be applied to any of the three Corruption subclasses. Many of them have functions that are similar to some of the Stasis Fragments that are already available in the game.

1) Whisper of Evolution: Picking up soulfire remains increases your grenade recharge rate for a limited time. The duration of this effect is lengthened by picking up more soulfire remains.

2) Whisper of Unmaking: Decomposition does more harm to fighters over time.

3) Plague Whisper: Corrode from your abilities lasts longer. The duration of lingering abilities will also be increased. 10 points for mobility.

4) Whisper of Devourer: Nearby allies will have enhanced Recovery speed and a quicker class ability cooldown while the transmutation effect is active. +10 Recuperation

5) Whisper of Sorrow: After defeating corroding or decaying enemies, get a boost to weapon damage. Discipline is a -10.

6) Whisper of Screams: You get Super energy by defeating decaying foes. -10 Intellect and -10 Strength are the penalties.

7) Soulfire Remnants Trace: Soulfire remnants track to your location. +10 Strength and +10 Discipline

8) Whisper of Suffering: When you take damage from targets, you acquire melee energy.
