Chibig Studios began the saga with a mobile version of Deiland Tiny Planet in 2016. The game received a lot of positive feedback, but there was still room for improvement. Two years later they are back with an improved and newer version for PS4 and PC.

A few years ago, before 2020, Chibig Studio decided to develop Deiland on Nintendo Switch under the new name Deiland: Pocket Planet Edition with exclusive content for Nintendo Switch. They launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the game, and within 24 hours that dream came true as the campaign was funded. Studio Chibig’s first game on the Switch was Summer in Mara, which we reviewed and wrote user guides for.

Take care of your planet

Diland: Pocket Planet Edition is a farming adventure where you have to take care of your little planet. You will have to farm, craft, fight and explore the world of Deyland.

You play as Arco in this single player, coming-of-age story. You will help many other people who visit your small planet by completing quests for them. This is how you discover the secrets that lie at the heart of your little planet.

Young Arco

The story revolves around Arco, who is, I think, about ten years old. Arco lives on the smallest planet in the universe. He wears a red cloak and a pendant with the crystal stone. Arco knows nothing of his past or the purpose of his stay on Diland. As the game progresses, he will understand things better, and so will you.

I don’t want to go into the details of the story or I might spoil it. What I’m saying is, Dyland: The story of Pocket Planet Edition is very intriguing, you get to hear parts of the story in different ways throughout the game. From the whispers of the night to the stories of visitors as they land on your planet.

Agriculture, shipping and research

The mechanics of Deiland are pretty simple, if you’ve played Summer in Mara before, it’s similar. You work your little piece of land, only three plots, you talk to visitors, you do whole quests for them, basically you make this item and deliver it as a quest. They craft, fish, mine and care for animals. You will eventually leave your planet and visit other planets as the story develops.

The difference is Dyland: Pocket Planet Edition in Mara is that you are on a planet, and that is often around the corner.
When it rains, you can rotate the planet or move the clouds to provide extra water for plants and trees and make them grow faster. Also, if a meteor strikes and threatens a house or crop in Arco, the planet can be rotated to crash safely. I love this deviation from the norm in the game, it keeps you on your toes. You need to know when your planet is in danger and act accordingly to save crops and such.

Help for Earth Visitors

If the visitors to your planet need help landing their ship, you only have a few seconds to do so or they will fly away. You can visit other planets yourself by taking the wheel of one of the spaceships. In between crafting, farming and shopping, you’re constantly protecting your little planet.

Intruders in the form of monstrous slugs, bats and strange flower creatures will visit your planet. The battles are simple, a few presses of the A button and your opponent will deal with themselves. The various enemies can be killed faster thanks to the different tools at your disposal. Later on some magic comes into play, you can use your wand to kill enemies and send healing potions and the like. As you work and farm, Arco’s experience level increases, and you have a choice of two skills that increase along with his level. It’s not a detailed skill system like we’ve seen in other games, but it adds a little more to the game than just raising Arco’s experience level.

Dealing with adults and children

It’s a great game if you want to sit back and relax while taking care of your own little planet. The characters are cute and fun, I think Dayland will appeal to both adults and children.

That’s right, Dylan: Pocket Planet Edition is not without its flaws. The quizzes are not explained very well, which can lead to frustration for some. Many visitors to your planet will ask you for things, and you have no idea where to get them. The game doesn’t offer many helpful hints, the little bits of information the player gets are no substitute for a more detailed tutorial. It’s not a complicated game, far from it, but some things could be explained a bit more than they are.

Features like the cabin are cosmetic because you can’t get in. The area is limited, both in location and quantity, making it impossible to completely convert it to farmland, which is what I really want to do anyway. Some elements like fountains, flower pots and trees can be placed almost anywhere, but it’s a good idea to leave an open area for visitors to plant their spaceships.

Image and sound tracks

Diland: Pocket Planet Edition features the same cartoonish graphics as Summer in Mara. The game is colorful and vibrant, and the changing seasons ensure that your planet is never the same.

Diland: Pocket Planet’s soundtrack is quiet and adapts to different situations. Visitors to the planet have their own fun sound and wake up in a soothing atmosphere.  Although sometimes there is no music to be heard, the experience is never ruined.

Control

The game runs pretty well, I had no frame rate issues, and load times are kept to a minimum. Twice I’ve had the text switch from English to Spanish during the cut screen. It’s clear that the developers at Chibg have learned a lot since the release of Summer in Mara on the Switch, and I think that shows in Deiland: Pocket Planet Edition, because the performance is much smoother.

The game is controlled by a cheerful Link, and the controls work well. But again, the controls and menu access are not explained in detail to the player, who therefore has to do it by trial and error.

Supplement

After playing Deiland for hours, I think Studio Chibig has done a great job building the adventure sandbox genre. With a bit of free roaming, small RPG and simulation aspects. If you enjoyed your summer in Mara, you’ll love Deiland, too: Pocket Planet Edition.

Some people will like it because of the sense of accomplishment. Many others will not like it because it takes a while for plants and trees to grow. Patient players probably won’t appreciate it.

However, if you’re looking for a game with lots of farming, crafting and quests, then Deiland: Pocket Planet Edition is your game. The story is interesting, but it’s not the kind of game you go through quickly. It’s an adventure to take the time to enjoy the good life your planet offers, and to stop and smell the roses along the way.

Final Judgment : I love the party.
