MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries (Xbox Series S/X)

The year is 2031, and the Aerotech Corporation has created one of the most advanced battlemechs to ever walk the battlefield. The airborne terror known as the GAR-9 is one of the most feared mechs in the galaxy. An advanced multi-role machine, it serves as an anti-infantry, anti-aircraft, and anti-ship weapon system. The GAR-9 features a powerful particle cannon, an advanced Targeting Array, and years of hard-earned battle experience.

The latest game in the Mechwarrior series, this time for the Xbox. The game features a 30 mission campaign, multiplayer, skirmish and a new game mode called “The Insurrection”. The campaign stars a former mercenary turned Mechwarrior, who is called in to find out if there is a growing conflict between two factions.

The Mech Warrior series of games is one of my childhood favorites. I played the first Mech Warrior on the PC, and loved it, but I never had a chance to play the second game. I was always too busy to go to my parent’s house to play the games. Until one day I was bored and decided to turn on my PS2, I had heard the first Mech Warrior was available on that console. I was very surprised to find out that it was a port to the PS2 and not a new game. But the game was still very fun. So I decided to buy the game and enjoy it on my PS2. Luckily it was a great game, one of the best games I have played on the PS2. Mech

It’s strange to think that an iconic PC gaming franchise like MechWarrior is almost unknown to the younger generation of gamers, especially when you consider that the last canonical game in the franchise came out before MechWarrior 5 : Mercenaries was released twenty years ago. I remember growing up in the 90s thinking this was the hardest and most exclusive franchise of all, usually tied to high-end PCs, with advanced graphics and complex controls. MechWarrior 5 has the daunting task of reviving the series for old school fans, but also bringing it to a younger generation of gamers, not only on PC, but also on Xbox One and the S and X series.

I understand it’s cool to be able to see your mecha, but MechWarrior 5’s third-person mode makes life difficult for the player.

MechWarrior 5 follows the same pattern as the other games in the franchise: It’s a first-person shooter in which you control giant mechas that deliberately move in the most devious ways. You should always pay attention to the rotation of your mecha’s legs, as well as the direction of flight of your weapon. One mistake can cost you dear. This is the kind of game that will easily captivate players who haven’t played any of the previous iterations of the franchise. Who doesn’t like to shoot giant robots at other giant robots?

Unfortunately, MechWarrior’s greatest virtue – its unique control system – may make people think twice before playing this game. It’s not bad, but it takes time to get used to. If you choose third person mode, you reduce your chances of victory: Sure, the wider view of the battlefield is helpful, but it makes aiming and shooting much more difficult. You also have to keep in mind that your robots aren’t really free to move, like in games like Daemon X Machina. They accelerate like cars, which means they still run like crazy in a straight line when you take your finger off the analog stick. Don’t forget to brake if you have to. Play this game with a mouse and keyboard if possible….. Or stick with the PC version, for that matter.

MechWarrior 5 may not have the sharpest graphics, but I love the ability to destroy almost every building on screen.

MechWarrior 5 teaches players all its mechanics through a long and detailed tutorial mode and an excellent story mode, but the latter is probably the worst mode in the game. In short, a bland story told agonizingly slowly, with bad voice acting, terrible character models and repetitive missions. You’re here for the multiplayer, not the story of Johnny Random avenging his dead father.

Keep in mind that MechWarrior 5 will be released exclusively on the Epic Games Store for about a year in 2019. This is definitely not a next-gen game, even though it uses the Xbox Series S/X version. Load times are short but stubborn, the framerate occasionally crashes, and the environments are pretty but don’t feel next-gen. Also notable are the aforementioned terrible character models, which may seem odd for a mech game, but pop up constantly between missions. The graphics are excellent, especially in terms of the overall design of the jacket.

These human models are excellent.

It’s far from a bad game (in fact, you have to ruin it to make mechs with rocket launchers uninteresting), but I expected something more. MechWarrior 5 : Mercenaries spends too much effort on unnecessary filler elements, like an unserious plot and a boring promotion system. It’s the multiplayer mode that shines the most, but again, I think it’s best experienced on a PC with a mouse and keyboard.

The graphics are excellent, as you’d expect from a mech game, but the game clearly doesn’t showcase the capabilities of next-gen consoles. There are frame rate issues, as well as terrible people models. MechWarrior 5’s operating system will take some getting used to, but it’s more intuitive than expected. Just make sure you play in first person.
A memorable plot and soundtrack that, while not bad in itself, fades from memory as quickly as it appeared. The game would be much better if it focused less on the boring story and more on what we’re here for: Chaos. The main gameplay is great, and the multiplayer is excellent. Repetitive missions and an inordinate amount of grinding, not so much…..
Final decision: 7.0
