Psychonauts 2 is a psychedelic and emotional thrill ride full of heart – Review

In Psychonauts 2, players take on the role of a young psychonaut called Raz, who is a budding psychic trainee in a highly secretive organization. In this sequel to Double Fine’s beloved 2008 title, players must master a series of psychic disciplines including clairvoyance, telekinesis, and mind control to solve puzzles and fight enemies. The sequel took a while to come out, after development started in 2011, and while it may take a little while to get to grips with the control scheme, it is a title that should be experienced by any fan of the first game.

Psychonauts 2 is a psychedelic and emotional thrill ride full of heart – Review From the first time I played Psychonauts I was hooked. Its an adventure game about exploration, storytelling, and puzzles that is equal parts silly, endearing, and astonishingly moving. I’m not sure what I expected from Psychonauts 2, but it’s not like I was expecting anything. I didn’t expect it to be as good as it is. Psychonauts 2 is simply an amazing game that I can’t recommend enough.

The first Psychonauts was published 17 years ago, and Razputin’s platform adventure returns in a big way in Psychonauts 2. Things remain exactly where we left them in the first game, and apart from the graphical upgrade, it doesn’t seem like creator Double Fine Productions has missed a beat in bringing us back to the bizarre Psychonauts world.

The narrative has many references and callbacks to the original Psychonauts, but people who have never played it will not be disappointed. Psychonauts 2 has many references to the original game, but it is far more concerned with going ahead with a beautiful narrative full of people who develop as they deal with their inner demons. 

What Psychonauts 2 excels at is dealing with the psychological conflicts that afflict many of the characters in a mature way while still tossing in a clever joke here and there to lighten the atmosphere. Psychonauts 2 does an excellent job of handling all of these issues and is a pleasure to play.

A trip along memory lane

Everything seems like it snaps back into place in Psychonauts 2 since it takes place immediately after the original game. For those who haven’t played the original game, the first level does an excellent job of concentrating on the current plot and providing you with the necessary knowledge to play and enjoy the whole adventure.

The Psychonauts 2 has a simple premise: you play as aspiring Psychonaut psychic Razputin and enter people’s brains to battle bad figments and figure out what’s going on inside their heads. While these issues are addressed from the viewpoint of adversaries to be beat up and defeated in a video game, they are maturely handled in a manner that the primary audience who grew up with Psychonauts can connect to.

Getting back into shape

The basic gameplay, level design, and items search are all carried over from Psychonauts 1. I haven’t been able to pick up a game and really immerse myself in it in a long time. It’s a throwback to how games were originally played on the PlayStation 2, with the primary narrative taking center stage and treasures and unusual challenges taking a back seat.

Each new level introduces a fresh adventure that requires you to utilize Razputin’s psychic abilities in a unique way. Every now and then, you’ll acquire a new power, but you’ll probably stay with the ones you get at the start of the game, many of which Raz learned in the previous game. It was nice not having to learn these things all over again in a sequel. Razputin has matured since his first journey, much like the source material for Psychonauts 2.

The flow of battle in Psychonauts 2 considered one of the game’s major flaws. While inside a person’s mind, you’ll be fighting their figments, and certain figments can only be successfully destroyed with specific psychic abilities. You’re hitting them with a basic attack combination after you utilize those abilities for the first time. It’s a simple game, but when you’re battling three to four opponents at once, it may seem floaty, which contrasts with the generally fluid mobility you’ll enjoy when exploring.

The difficulties of the characters aren’t brushed aside in Psychonauts 2. Instead, you’ll go inside the minds of people who are struggling with alcoholism, people who don’t remember who they are and have panic episodes, and people who divide apart their personalities to better fit their circumstances. The levels have been imaginatively created to represent these issues, with each setting reflecting the person’s psyche that Razputin is psychically invading.

When it comes to investigating several of these levels, I don’t use the word “sublime” lightly. It was also satisfying to finish the main narrative of Psychonauts 2 and return to earlier levels to complete a few trinkets I had missed throughout the main tale. Returning to earlier levels was optional, but it felt good to go through them all again since it enabled me to see the tiny nuances the designers provided for players to notice and how they fit into the overall personality of the person’s thinking.

While the fighting in Psychonauts 2 isn’t very good, it isn’t the game’s main emphasis. As you go through the narrative, you’ll be much more worried with the characters and learning about the plot’s fascinating aspects.

Many of the characters in Psychonauts 2 are dealing with grief, sorrow, and coming to terms with previous errors. It’s difficult to believe that a sequel published 17 years after the first game can deal with difficult subjects in a mature and contemporary tone, but Psychonauts 2 nails it with excellent narrative, character development, and satisfying gameplay.

I got a chance to sit down with the developers of Psychonauts 2 from Double Fine Productions to find out what the newest entry in the classic franchise has to offer. I have to say, I was blown away.
