SSD Storage Review Format and Methodology

I’ve been known to post a bit of personal information in my reviews, and other times I’m pretty discreet. But there are some things I just can’t keep to myself.

We have been writing about the importance of solid state storage in the SSD storage review format and methodology articles for the past year. We noticed that our readers found these articles to be well researched and informative without being overly technical. But not all SSD reviews are created equal.

SSD is a new type of storage that is used in computers, and is gaining more popularity every year. There have been great developments in technology that make data transfer faster from the moment it is received and stored in the storage device. The price of SSD storage is now lower than hard drive storage, but there are differences in performance between the two.


This page explains the format and technique used by to evaluate SSDs and other comparable storage devices. Our aim is to preserve consistency, repeatability, and accuracy in each review while also allowing data to be compared. 

Our ultimate goal is to create a benchmark database that will allow you to compare the results of SSDs and storage devices. Our format and methods must be standardized in order to achieve this. From the management of the hardware installation through the software and settings, this uniformity must be followed.

Before we go into the format, keep in mind that we will evaluate any kind of SSD. From PCIe to SATA, M.2 to 2.5″, and every other interface or protocol that has been developed. You can see a list of our storage reviews here.    

The Operation’s Heart – The Test Bench

It all begins with the hardware, and as we are hardware lovers here at, we will begin there. The test bench shall remain uniform and standardized. This test system will be used to test every SSD and storage device. We are aware that any significant modifications to the test system may have an impact on the findings.

An ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) motherboard serves as our test bench. On all of its M.2 slots, M.2 1 and M.2 2, this AMD X570 chipset motherboard supports PCI-Express 4.0 x4 (PCI-Express 4.0 x4). The M.2 2 slot uses the X570 chipset for its lanes, however it can operate at Gen 4 speeds since it supports PCIe 4.0 x4 mode. It’s also capable of supporting RAID. For testing SATA drives, it includes eight SATA 6Gb/s connectors. 

Our CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Zen 2 processor. PCI-Express 4.0 is fully supported by this CPU. Because it’s so multi-threaded, there’s less possibility of background processes interfering with the findings. An NZXT Kraken X63 AIO is used to keep the CPU cool. The memory is 16GB DDR4 G. SKILL Trident Z Neo operating at 3600MHz DOCP. 

Seasonic PRIME 850 Titanium SSR-850TR 850W 80+ Titanium Power Supply It’s a highly efficient and dependable system. The display is powered by an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Founders Edition video card.

The main boot drive, which contains Windows and all the benchmarks, is a SAMSUNG 860 EVO 2TB SATA SSD. 

In an open-air setting, all of this gear is mounted on a Primochill Praxis WetBenchSX Pro Flat Edition testing station. A 120mm case fan is connected to the optional fan mount bracket arm, allowing us to place a case fan directly over the SSD as required. We may now use a fan to directly cool the SSD if necessary. To block airflow to the SSD, it may be swiveled out of the way. We have complete control over how the SSD is cooled.

Configuration of Software

Software setup is equally as critical as hardware configuration. We’re using Windows 10 Pro, which has all of the newest updates and releases installed. To ensure the greatest I/O performance, all drivers are maintained up to date, with the AMD Chipset driver version being of the highest significance. Our benchmarking software is also kept up to date.

We deactivated background applications in Windows and customized privacy and other settings to eliminate as much trash as possible from running in the background. 

In Windows, we’ve activated the “High Performance” power profile.

To utilize Secure Erase and Secure Wipe on SSDs, we use Active KillDisk. After each benchmark, we execute the TRIMM command.

This review is being done on Samsung’s newest flagship, the Galaxy S21, which is also the world’s smallest 5.8-inch flagship phone. The S21 is the first Samsung flagship smartphone with an integrated vertical dual camera setup, and it’s also the first Android One device to ship with Oreo. The S21 is also the first Samsung phone to use the new microSD card slot, which Samsung is using to distinguish the S21 from the S20 (which uses the hybrid slot). Overall, the S21 is an attractive smartphone that has almost all the necessary features to make it a good choice for a flagship smartphone, but it just lacks one key feature that I think could earn it a higher score: a.
