CORSAIR Force Series MP600 1TB Gen4 PCIe NVMe SSD Review

PC gamers have been waiting for a long time for the new trend of PC gaming: Solid State Drives (SSD) were supposed to revolutionize PC gaming. They were supposed to be faster than the old mechanical hard-drives or best-sold mechanical hard-drives, and they were supposed to provide better game performance. Well, they have certainly done that. They have certainly brought a lot of improvements to PC gaming and they have certainly made the PC-gaming experience much better. And now, finally, there is a new type of SSD on the market that is more advanced and more powerful than all other types on the market.

As the host of the Corsair Force MP600 SSD, I acquired this new SSD to test out: the MP600. A PCIe based SSD aimed at the high end of the market, the MP600 comes in a range of capacities, sizes and options. The 512GB model I received is a PCIe Gen4 x4 based product, and I’m going to be talking about it for a while in my review.

When it comes to SSDs, performance is king. NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) is a new, industry-defining memory card format that breaks the limits of traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) by incorporating the fast data transfer speeds and low latency of solid-state drives (SSDs) with the high capacities and low power consumption of rotating media.

Introduction

CORSAIR is a well-known brand among computer aficionados when it comes to computer peripherals. CORSAIR is most known for its cooling, chassis, power supplies, fans, and memory, but it also makes M.2 storage SSDs. CORSAIR is also renowned for its USB flash storage, which includes some of the fastest USB drives on the market.

We’ve got one of CORSAIR’s SSDs on the test bench right now. The Force Series we’re looking at today is in the center of the pack in terms of performance and price, but it has the most endurance. It also comes with a five-year guarantee. It is available in capacities of 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB. 

They all have the same maximum sequential read performance, however their maximum sequential write performance varies considerably. The 500GB drive has a sequential write speed of 2500MB/s, while the 1TB and 2TB drives have sequential write rates of 4250MB/s. They also differ in endurance, with the 2TB capacity having the greatest (3600 TBW), the 1TB capacity having less (1800 TBW), and the 500GB capacity having the least (850 TBW). As a result, opt for the 1TB or 2TB model if you want the fastest drives, and 2TB if you want the greatest endurance. Today we’re looking at the 1TB model.

The CORSAIR Force MP600 SSD is a 1TB PCI-Express 4.0 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with high density 3D TLC NAND in the M.2 2280 form factor. It is compatible with the NVMe 1.3 protocol. It has sequential read and write speeds of up to 4950 MB/s and random read and write speeds of up to 680K IOPS and 600K IOPS, respectively. PCIe 3.0 interfaces are completely backward compatible with the SSD.

Components and Images

The CORSAIR Force MP600 1TB NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 SSD comes in a well-designed packaging with a visual of the SSD and its specifications prominently displayed on the front. The SSD is well-protected by foam and comes with a CORSAIR heatsink pre-installed.

CORSAIR has pre-installed a high-surface-area aluminum heatsink on the MP600 right out of the box. This prevents throttling by allowing it to retain its performance under high load. It has clamps on the front and rear that keep the SSD securely in place. There are no screws in this project; just clips are used. The heatsink is very substantial and sturdy on its own.

When we disassemble it, we discover thermal pads covering the controller, DRAM, and NAND flash on the front side. On the other hand, it’s a bit of a flop on the backside. There is just one thermal pad on the rear, which is very tiny and does not cover the DRAM or NAND storage. Instead, it serves as a buffer and guard for the SSD’s middle components. The imprints of these tiny capacitors and other components could be seen in the pad, indicating that it is neither covering or cooling the backside NAND modules or DRAM. The front-end components are well-cooled by thermal pads, while the back-end NAND chips are not.

Two TLC NAND flash chips, the controller, DRAM, and firmware are all on the front side. TABBG65AWV K2109N AB2161A25 is written on the NAND memory. These are Toshiba NAND chips, particularly BiCS4 96-layer 3D TLC BiCS4 96-layer 3D TLC BiCS4 96-layer 3D TLC BiCS4 96- On the reverse, there are two more of them. 

An SK Hynix DDR4 chip with the code H5AN4G8NBJR-UHC is also discovered. Another of these may be found on the back of the SSD. These are 4GB DDR4 chips with a voltage of 1.2V, totaling 1GB of DRAM. They are particularly DDR4-2400 since they are UH models. This is the series’ quickest SKU.

It supports dynamic SLC cache. The T-junction is rated at 125 degrees Celsius.
